WHAT IS ULTRASOUND?

Ultrasound are high frequency sound waves which are safe and painless.Ultrasound scans use sound waves to produce images of structures of inside of your body and display it on to the computer screen. It is the integral part of the various diagnostic modalities which give valuable information for diagnosis and assist in treating common conditions and diseases

It is safe procedure with no known risks and normally takes up-to 30 minutes but this may vary as some scans may require a longer duration

Ultrasound scans are performed by qualified Sonographers who may ask you remove part of your clothing and wear a gown or expose the area needed. You will be asked to lie down or sit, whatever position the examination demands. Then Sonographer will apply gel to the area of examination to prevent any air trapping which may block the sound waves. The Gel used is water based and can be easily removed from skin / clothing. Then holding the transducer(camera) in hand it is moved across the region of interest. The transducer transmits the sound waves and they are reflected back from different tissues at different intensities which are then converted into electrical signals, producing the final image on the ultrasound screen

Most scans are external but some may involve placing a transducer (camera) inside the opening of your body such as transvaginal and/ or internal pelvic scans.
